Dear friends,
Thanks to all of the folks checking in on us New Yorkers. Most people I know have a roof leak, basement flooding, or a transit odyssey to report after the excessive rain. Many of us are counting ourselves lucky — this time. We know that the rains will keep coming for us.
I feel very fortunate. I had to walk home from downtown Brooklyn because even the buses weren’t running to my neighborhood. A friend in Park Slope invited me for tea near the middle of my walk and my raingear was equal to the day.
This morning, I read the New York Times explainer, “Why New York City Keeps Flooding.” I thought of the fourteen students at PS 380 who were in the Young Scholars program I facilitated in 2019-2020.
They researched and wrote a book about sewers. I trust that they remember what they learned and that some of them are pulling this book off the shelf this weekend and talking to grownups about CSOs, rain gardens, and permeable pavement.
Read their book online!

It’s still raining here, though it’s just a drizzle now. I hope you are feeling lucky today and committed to work for a more climate-resilient city or town, wherever you live.
with love,
