November 25th
Dear ones,
There’s going to be less cooking and fewer dishes to wash this holiday and that will free up some time to work! The swamp needs draining, as you well know. Messy work, but someone has to do it.
Both Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue have lined their pockets while in the Senate, at the cost of the well-being of the people of Georgia and the nation. As chair of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, Perdue has sought to increase the Navy’s expenditures while holding stock in BWX Technologies, a contractor with the Navy. Loeffler’s insider-trading has already been well-reported. But wait, there’s more. Although Senate Members are prohibited from receiving or soliciting campaign contributions in federal buildings, that’s exactly what Loeffler did last week; her request was broadcast on Fox News. She is the wealthiest individual in Congress. The idea of gullible people contributing to elect this swamp thing upsets me greatly.
And now, I must clarify (before I get scolded), that actual swamps should not be drained. They are natural wetlands, rich with biodiversity. Georgia is home to the Okefenokee Swamp. Loeffler and Perdue back Trump’s agenda, which includes promoting mining in the Okefenokee Swamp:
Earlier this year, The Trump administration finalized the “Navigable Waters Rule,” which greatly reduced how many bodies of water receive federal protection. Previously, the Okefenokee Swamp was protected under the Clean Water Act, but now, the mining company, Twin Pines Minerals, can go forward with extracting titanium in a 600-acre area around the refuge.
Please find time to phone-bank, text bank, and/or write postcards for the upcoming Special Election in Georgia. We need to get the likes of Loeffler and Perdue out of the Senate. This is not one of those lesser-of-two-evils elections; Ossoff and Warnock are solid candidates who have spoken out for environmental justice. And, of course, there are huge implications for the new Administration’s agenda.
I am grateful that so many of you read my messages and work for justice by my side. Let’s take tomorrow off.
with love,
L
