Dear friends,
Remember the old saw that when the going gets tough, the tough get going? I had to look it up, because I’ve always heard it used sarcastically.
In fact, it’s meant to suggest that tough people get to work in the face of difficult circumstances.
Lawmakers in Knesset have approved a six-week spring recess, beginning on April 7, in spite of the political turmoil within Israel and the fact that they are prosecuting a war.
Our own Congress began a two-week recess on Monday, even though it has not taken up the increasingly urgent need to aid Ukraine. On Wednesday night, Russia launched a missile strike against Kharkiv, in northeast Ukraine. Zelenskiy renewed his pleas for military aid.
There is plenty of other urgent business before Congress that has been relegated to the back burner by Republican antics.
Instead, Republicans have tried to impeach Biden for unspecified and unsubstantiated ‘crimes’, and are pursuing the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas.
Tell Congress to pass the Right to Vote Act. This quick action is from Rise.
Ordinary Americans often work with little to no paid time off. Nearly half of the lowest 10 percent of earners, have no access to paid leave.
Tell Congress that every worker deserves paid time off! This quick action is from Moms Rising.
I write a lot about home care because I can’t stop thinking about it. My family is providing a lot of tag-team care to supplement the four hours daily that Medicare allows. I have never been more tired or more grateful for what care workers do. They are the toughest among us.
This is a critical moment in NYS. A fellow organizer highlighted the cuts for care that are on the table:
We CANNOT look for savings by cutting essential home care for older and disabled New Yorkers, and/or cutting wages for underpaid home care workers and then let insurance companies off the hook for taking billions of dollars meant for home care.
Tell your state legislators that home care workers deserve fair pay! There’s a script from NY Caring Majority and these calls are urgent.
We need to be tough and stay in the work.
with love,
L
