Dear friends,
There’s not a lot of good news to report, and I am a crap liar, so I won’t try to oversell what there is.
Here are some signs that folks are swimming against the tide, in the direction of justice:
At both the city and state level, New York is increase abortion services for locals and folks coming in from out of state. By the fall, NYC will have a citywide hotline in operation and will ensure that the city’s sexual health clinics are equipped to meet the demand for medical abortions.
Speaking of swimming: All 51 of NYC’s outdoor pools are open today. The hours are limited because of the lifeguard shortage.
Tell the mayor that the lifeguard shortage can be addressed with better pay!
While other parts of the country have seen a wave of new restrictions over teaching about gender identity, the nation’s largest school system has taken the opposite approach. . . .
But like most things within the nation’s largest school district, what happens across the city’s 1,600 schools often varies school to school and even classroom to classroom.
I came back to NYC on Sunday night, around 10 PM. I am always thrilled to come home from anywhere. Arriving when the subway was full of tired-and-still-fabulous participants in the NYC Pride March made it feel like I was being welcomed.
I ran onto an A train as the doors were closing and the train jolted forward before I could sit. Two beautiful people caught my arms so I didn’t fall. Say what you will, but NYC is still the greatest.
If you haven’t yet voted today, polls are open until 9 PM. I’m hoping we can deliver Ana Maria Archila as our candidate for Lieutenant Governor. That would be some good news.
with love,
L
