Dear friends,
I won’t review the alarming climate news from around the world, and I’m finding it impossible to view Joe Manchin with anything but contempt. We’re just going to get right down to climate action.
Emissions data from three companies, Bit Digital, Greenidge and Stronghold, indicated their operations create 1.6m tons of CO2 annually, an amount produced by nearly 360,000 cars. Their environmental impact is significant despite industry claims about clean energy use and climate commitments, the lawmakers wrote.
Greenidge Generation is located in NYS, and was recently denied a permit because of high emissions.
Tell Governor Hochul that NYS must lead the way to regulate cryptomining! This ready-made action has been updated.
The scale of the crypto problem is tremendous, however. There should, of course, be federal action as well.
The Biden Administration indicated that it has been formulating its own policy to address cryptocurrency mining in hopes of reducing energy consumption and emissions. Additionally, other countries, including China, have already banned cryptocurrency transactions.
Cryptomining is a threat to the environment, and the crypto market is a threat to the whole economy. Lael Brainard, the vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board, gave a speech ten days ago, in which she said, in effect,
that the crypto crash offers an opportunity — a moment in which effective regulation has become politically possible. And she urges us to take advantage of this moment, before crypto stops being a mere casino and becomes a threat to financial stability.
Urge the president to regulate cryptocurrencies and crypto mining in order to address the climate crisis and reduce rising energy costs. This 30-second action is brand new.
In the interests of energy conservation (mine), we’ll end today’s short docket with some easy ready-made actions from NY Renews. Just a reminder that you need not live in NYS to comment on the state’s Climate Action Plan.
