Dear friends,
Yesterday, the Senate sought unanimous consent for the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, but three members blocked the effort. The bill has overwhelming bipartisan support and this needless delay cannot be allowed to block this important legislation.
Schumer won reelection as Senate Majority Leader yesterday. Congratulate him and tell him to call this vote.
Call Chuck Schumer — 202-224-6542 — to tell him to call a vote on the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.
The politically non-binary, newly independent Kyrsten Sinema is, no doubt, giving Schumer a headache. That’s not new. For now, let’s ignore her.
There’s been some great reporting on the labor action at the New School, which is in its fourth week. Students have occupied a building at the New School in support of striking adjunct faculty.
If you have ties to the New School, let them know where you stand on the strike.
Clover, [a] UC Davis professor, says faculty who aren’t grading work and refusing to submit grades are doing so knowing that “the item with the most weight on it is the work of grading.”
“If you have to figure out what products people are buying for their tuition money, it’s grades,” he said. “Withdrawing our ability to deliver that product or interfering with that product is the strongest way to support the strike.”
Find a way to support striking workers at UC! There is a petition, picket information, and a strike fund.
Contracts with many NYC municipal workers, including teachers have expired. There is more labor action ahead.
Yesterday, I testified to the city’s Finance Committee Hearing to protest the cuts to education and social services. You can read my testimony here.
I’m taking the rest of the day off to see a dear friend. Please call Schumer before you take the afternoon off.
with love,
L
