Dear ones,
We have achieved Friday. Now that Chauvin has been convicted of murder, there is still important structural change needed.
Wrap your mind around today’s abolition movement. This may take you a while, which is fine.
You can be forgiven for thinking that a bill named for George Floyd might “meet the moment,” but it does not. It’s our responsibility to read the fine print and convince our legislators to invest in communities instead of failed reforms.
Read the letter from M4BL about the shortcomings of the Justice in Policing Act.
Tell your Congressional Representative to support the BREATHE Act.
The folks at VOCAL-NY are ready for NYC’s budget negotiations with their vision — a Caring and Compassionate New Deal for New Yorkers — and specific budgetary needs to provide housing, mental health care, jobs, and a broad array of social services, including substance abuse treatment.
Contact your City Council member to let them know that you support VOCAL-NY’s budget demands to defund $4 Billion from Police, Courts, and Jails and Invest $4 Billion in Housing, Social Services, and Care.
There is only one candidate whose platform and vision align with these demands. I was happy to see this sign on a walk in my neighborhood.
Support Dianne Morales!
During the Great Depression, someone started referring to then-Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia’s job as the ‘second toughest job in America’. Things will not be easy for our next mayor, given the confluence of major challenges they will face.

The Alliance for Climate Education has a new initiative to combat climate misinformation in ads aimed at young people. The dark money groups and so-called ‘think tanks’ that post these insidious ads are not facing resistance from social media companies that profit from their practices.
In the coming year, the Alliance for Climate Education is trying to expand their climate education work by funding
the Creator Collective, [their] community of thousands of youth content creators and social influencers that are committed to taking back social media for good, and drowning out climate misinformation with a new narrative.
“Donate to ACE to reach millions of young people with the education, tools, and support they need to advocate for climate justice and participate in our democracy.”
If you’re a teacher, join ACE’s network.
Here are some corrections from this week:
On Monday, I quoted and discussed David Treuer’s “Return the National Parks to the Tribes,” but failed to include the link to this excellent piece.
On Tuesday, I invited you the launch for the education platform from The People’s Plan NYC. I thought it was last night, but it’s next week. I will invite you when it’s closer!
Have a great weekend!
with love,
L
